[GUEST] Viet “Fact Check” is a self-declared “progressive” group allegedly set up by young Vietnamese Americans, which purports to debunk what they accuse of being right-wing “misinformation”.
However, there are instances of the group using half-truth to “refute” true statements made by other Vietnamese Americans.
One of them is related to the claim Joe Biden rejected Vietnamese refugees back in 1975. The group argued that most Democrat Congress lawmakers voted for Vietnamese refugee admission while ignoring the existence of a Senate Committee on Foreign Relations transcript, dated 12 April 1975, detailing Joe Biden’s reluctance to refugee intake during an emergency meeting with the then State Sec., Henry Kissinger.
The group also willfully ignored the fact a handful of prominent Democrats – especially the then Californian Governor Jerry Brown having refused the landing of Vietnamese refugee aircraft in California & claimed “500,000 Viet refugees would take away 1,000,000 American jobs”, actually frowned on accepting Vietnamese refugees.
What is the fact is that the late Republican President Gerald Ford, against the American public opinion of only 36% favoring Vietnamese refugee admission, pushed for granting them a safe haven in the face of Viet Cong’s massacres & criticized those who opposed for “forgetting why their ancestors were here”. The arrival of Vietnamese refugees peaked at Republican Ronald Reagan presidency, with as many as 800,000 reaching America from 1981 to 1989. The late Republican Senator John McCain – an ex-POW in Vietnam was the most vocal Congress advocate of Vietnamese refugee rights.
