[Plkno1] Admin please post IG thanks! I spent a lot of time on this

I may use abbreviations, and may make careless grammatical mistakes or spelling mistakes. I apologize for this first. If you find some, I’m happy to learn from my mistakes so that my English can be improved.

Let me go straight to the point. An issue has been bugging me for quite a long time already and I would like to talk about it. This is the matter about using English.

Every time someone submits an English article, there will be at least a quarter of the comments complaining that the article is in English, demanding translation, criticizing the submitter for “not respecting Hong Kong culture”, saying that “this is Hong Kong”, criticizing the submitter for using English with a view to showing that they are “very outstanding”, “you don’t fucking know how to speak Chinese? On9” or comment “I go to school by bus” and its variants to express sarcasm to the submitter for using English. I have the intention of discussing this issue for a long time already. Now that I see so much of these comments, I would like to refute each point one by one below.

“I don’t understand English, translation pls”
Submitters are secondary school students, the English they use won’t be like Shakespeare’s. Do you really not understand? Or are you merely pretending? I think the answer is blatant. Even if you really don’t understand, you can look up the words in a dictionary, and learn a few English vocabs along the way. Isn’t this nice? Allow me to word it more bluntly, I apologize if it’s insulting: if you don’t wanna read it cuz you don’t understand, then don’t read it. Since everyone learns English at school, submitters assume that everyone knows basic English. So please don’t use “if they use Arabic, do I have to learn it too?!” as a counterargument.

“You don’t respect Hong Kong culture, this is Hong Kong. We speak Chinese in Hong Kong, if you wanna speak English, go to foreign countries.”
Hong Kong used to be a British colony. Up to this day, English is still an official language of Hong Kong. In other words, using English is a part of Hong Kong culture. You may say, HongKongers speak Chinese in their daily lives, why do we use English when typing and writing? I think we understand the difference between writing and speaking. You also use English when texting others on WhatsApp, but you won’t speak English when chatting with others casually. Even if English isn’t an official language of Hong Kong, even if the British Empire haven’t ruled Hong Kong before, it’s undeniable that English is the lingua franca of the world. This is not limited to Hong Kong, as nearly every country in the world has made English learning compulsory for young students. You may think it’s unfair. Why is it that I have to learn English, but not the foreigners learn Chinese instead? Well, the “sad” truth is that, the British Empire had ruled a quarter of the world at its greatest height (excluding the United States of America) and its former colony, the United States, is still, up to this day, the only Superpower on Earth. The cultural legacy of the British Empire still has a profound impact on the world. Plus, this situation has persisted since the end of the second world war. I hope that you can accept this truth. If you want to change this, you can join the Communist Party of China, and help China surpass the United States of America, spreading Chinese culture to the world, and increase the soft power of China. If so, it’s fine not to use English, and people from other countries to use Chinese instead.

“Using English won’t show that you are outstanding”
I can understand your previous two views, but when I hear the argument that “using English is to show that you are outstanding”, I’m utterly puzzled. Of course, I would not deny that some people may use very sophisticated words that we won’t use in our daily lives in their English articles in order to show that their excellence. But most of the time, the submitters use very basic English, and the choice of diction is precise and simple, but still there are a lot of people who criticize them that their intention of using English is to show that they excel at English. Actually, are the people with this assertion suggesting that English is superior over Chinese? Then you really should work hard on learning English. Actually, typing and writing in English instead of Chinese has various merits. Although some may hold opposing views, on average, writing English is faster than Chinese, and in a lot of occasions, typing English is faster than Chinese too. And using more English can help improve your English. A lot of people set their phone and computer language to English, and imo, reading English is more comfortable in contradistinction to Chinese. What I want to say is, there are a lot of reasons people use English, so I hope you don’t surmise people’s intention of using English. I also contend that the vast majority of people wouldn’t use English just because they want to show off.

“You don’t fucking know how to speak Chinese? on9”
People do use profanity to attack people who use English. I’m not exaggerating. To begin with, using profanity wouldn’t prove that you “know more Chinese” than others. It just proves that you have a low EQ and cultural level. It’s totally fine to use profanity when talking to your close friend. But using profanity to attack people who use English will just show your low cultural level. Responding to the point, does using English means not knowing Chinese or other languages? Following the same logic, does using Chinese means not knowing English? This logic is utterly contemptible, total bullshit. People who say these kind of arguments, please don’t embarrass yourselves.

I repeat my article in Chinese, so you can freely choose the language you want to read.
